Open Studio: Eboni Pearl

Open Studio returns this week by showcasing the work of collage artist, photographer and life interpreter Eboni Pearl out of Houston, TX. Channeling some of our favorite nostalgic themes, she remains relevant yet distant from her contemporaries. Below she decided to showcase some of her most recent collage work. The juxtaposition between her influences as a woman and those of her childhood grants a new narrative of black womanhood and coming of age. Using evenly saturated hues, her collages provide a calming, retrospective gaze into Eboni Pearl's world. For more of her work, check out here website here:

Call Me Duchess Collage Series

Curated using original Playboy Magazines from the 60's/70's & the Sunday color comics. An eight part series with a "pussy is power" feel. After completing the original collage, I had several full page tear outs. Juxtaposing them according to color and feel turned me on so I ran with it.

Let's Taste Collage Series

Using "Eyes & Ears"/"Mouth & Melanin" as titles, I'm referring to my own intrinsic sensuality; the way in which I absorb the world around me. Curated using original vintage ads circa 1928-1988.

Suzi Carmichael Collage Series

What change feels like when you're stubborn. Curated using Dr. Seuss books, I'm reacquainting myself with my inner child. That meaning revealed itself later. I was solely interested in musing the subtle pinks, teals & mint green.
